Sagesim

Core engineering on Sagesim, the medical simulation platform developed for Dr. Sage Wexner, MD, providing immersive, hands-on training scenarios for medical students, residents, nurses and healthcare professionals.

The problem

Clinical judgement cannot be learned from reading. It comes from making decisions under uncertainty and finding out what happened — which, in medicine, is exactly the thing you cannot practise on real patients.

Simulation exists to close that gap. Its value is not in showing the right answer but in letting a learner take a wrong path far enough to understand why it was wrong.

Constraints

The content is authored by clinicians, not engineers. If building a scenario requires technical skill, scenarios stop being written and the platform has nothing to teach with.

Learners also arrive at wildly different levels — a first-year student and a practising nurse need different things from the same clinical situation. And a scenario that only rewards the correct path teaches recognition rather than reasoning, so the branches that go wrong have to be as carefully built as the ones that go right.

What I built

Core engineering on the simulation platform — the scenario model and the mechanics that let a learner work through a case, make decisions, and see the consequences play out.

Outcome

A platform where clinical educators could put learners through decisions that matter, and where being wrong was part of the training rather than the end of it.
