Working with Europe

European work brings a constraint that US-shaped advice tends to skip: where the data is allowed to live, and what has to be provable about it. The Single Digital Gateway programme is an EU programme, and public-sector delivery of that kind is a useful education in building for rules that are not negotiable.

The AI engagements are the ones that come up most: a prototype that convinced a room, and a production system that has to survive real inputs, real costs, and someone asking why it answered the way it did.

The practical answers

Working hours
Central European Time, remote
Shape
One to two days a week, three months minimum
Typical brief
AI product delivery, or a team that has stopped shipping

Engagements available in Europe

Engagement Owns Commitment Fits
Fractional CTO Technical direction 1–2 days/week · 3-month min Founders alone on the technical calls
Fractional VP of Engineering Delivery and the team 1–2 days/week · 3-month min Team outgrew ad-hoc coordination
Advisory retainer Judgement, not the team A few hours a month You have leaders, want them checked
Hands-on consulting Execution Scoped per project One thing has to get built

All four run at the same shape — one to two days a week, three months minimum. The detail of each, and what you are left holding afterwards, is on the advisory page.

The work behind it

Eleven years building and leading engineering teams, including KLM’s airport operations platform and the Single Digital Gateway programme used by every Dutch municipality, province and water authority. Deciding between the first two engagements is its own question — fractional CTO versus a full-time VP of Engineering works through it.

Can I hire a fractional VP of Engineering in Europe?

Yes. The fractional VP of Engineering engagement covers delivery under an existing founder or CTO — process, review habits, decomposition and growing the team — and runs remotely from the Netherlands across European timezones.

Who can advise a European AI startup on getting to production?

That is the brief he is brought in for most often: taking an AI product from a prototype that demos well to a system that holds up under real traffic, real cost and real scrutiny.
